The Fantastic Four: First Steps Brings a Fresh Take to Marvel's Beloved Team

Since their last major cinematic appearance in 2015, the iconic superhero team known as the Fantastic Four has been notably absent from the silver screen. Their only recent appearance was a cameo by John Krasinski as Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, fans of Marvel can rejoice as this hiatus is about to end. The upcoming film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to premiere on July 25, will introduce an entirely new incarnation of the team, which will explore a different realm within the vast multiverse, distinct from the established Sacred Timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In a recent interview with Empire, director Matt Shakman shared exciting insights about the film's unique approach and aesthetic. Known for his work on the critically acclaimed series WandaVision, Shakman described First Steps as taking a significant departure from the traditional MCU formula. He emphasized that this film will not be overwhelmed with the usual references and cameos that fans have come to expect. As he stated, “We are our own universe. Which is wonderful and liberating. There's really no [other] superheroes. There's no Easter eggs. There's no running into Iron Man or whatever. They're it, in this universe.”
This refreshing take allows the film to carve its own identity. Shakman expressed his appreciation for the interconnected Marvel Universe while highlighting the creative freedom that comes with telling a standalone story. He added, “I love the interconnected Marvel Universe, but we get to do something so new and so different. Eventually, this world will meet up with other worlds — but for now, this is our own little corner.”
For many, this separation from the broader MCU landscape is a welcome change. Unlike previous adaptations, including those directed by Tim Story in the mid-2000s and the ill-fated reboot by Josh Trank in 2015, The Fantastic Four: First Steps starts with a clean slate. The film is not burdened by past narratives or expectations, making it more accessible to newcomers who might not be familiar with the intricate Marvel lore.
Fans can anticipate an exhilarating journey as the Fantastic Four, often referred to as Marvel's First Family, work to defend their universe against formidable foes like Galactus and the enigmatic Silver Surfer. Given this self-contained narrative, it presents an excellent opportunity for viewers to dive into the Marvel universe without needing extensive background knowledge.
However, this does not mean that the Fantastic Four will remain isolated forever. Shakman hinted at future connections, revealing that the team will appear in the highly anticipated 2026 film, Avengers: Doomsday. The ensemble cast will include notable names such as Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic and Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman. Additionally, rumors are circulating about Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom and possibly even Chris Evans in an undisclosed capacity!
As excitement builds for the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel enthusiasts can also look forward to the arrival of Thunderbolts, which is set to hit theaters on May 2, offering more connections to the larger MCU storylines.
