Kylian Mbapp Launches Legal Battle Against PSG Over Unpaid Wages

Kylian Mbapp, the renowned French footballer and captain of the national team, has taken a significant step in his ongoing dispute with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by engaging legal counsel to initiate a series of legal proceedings. The crux of this contentious issue revolves around Mbapps assertion that he is owed a staggering 55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses from his former club, PSG.
This legal battle has its roots in Mbapp's controversial transfer to Spanish football powerhouse Real Madrid in 2024. The player alleges that PSG sidelined him from the team the previous year after he declined to extend his contract, effectively forcing him out. This move has led to a deterioration of relations between the star player and the club that once celebrated him as one of its greatest assets.
During a press conference held in Paris, one of Mbapps attorneys, Thomas Clay, emphasized the players status, stating, Kylian Mbapp is the captain of the French national team and the highest scorer in the history of the club. He deserves recognition, which translates to him receiving the salary he is owed. The gravity of the situation was further underscored by another of his lawyers, Delphine Verheyden, who declared that it was time to go on the attack against PSG. She revealed that a Paris civil court judge had provisionally ordered the freezing of 55 million of PSGs assets, indicating the seriousness of the legal claims being made.
The escalating legal feud illustrates the intense animosity that has developed between Mbapp and PSG, the premier football club in France. In response to these allegations, PSG maintained that Mbapps narrative was a distortion of reality, existing in a parallel universe of fanciful storytelling. The club expressed confusion over Mbapps refusal to explore an amicable resolution, highlighting that he has yet to take the case to the Labour Court, which they argue is the appropriate venue for such disputes.
Mbapp, who became the second-most valuable player in history when he transferred to PSG for 180 million in 2017, is determined to pursue all avenues of redress. His legal team has also lodged a complaint with the French Football Federation, urging it to inform UEFA, the governing body of European football, about the alleged unpaid wages. This action carries significant implications, as it could potentially lead to PSG facing sanctions or even being barred from competing in the prestigious Champions League. However, sources close to PSG have downplayed the likelihood of such outcomes, and UEFA has chosen not to comment on the matter.
Furthermore, Mbapps lawyers indicated plans to pursue additional claims in the labour courts. The player contends that following his announcement in February 2024 of his intent to leave PSG, the club stopped his salary payments from April to June 2024, just before he signed with Real Madrid on a free transfer.
PSG maintains that Mbapp had verbally agreed to forgo his wages during this transitional period, asserting that they do not owe him any payments. Despite this, insiders have revealed that the club has set aside 55 million in anticipation of a possible court ruling requiring them to pay Mbapp. In a further measure of his legal strategy, one of Mbapps lawyers announced that the player intends to file a criminal complaint against PSG for moral harassment. He alleges that the decision by PSG to exclude him from the team in 2023 amounted to extortion, pressuring him into signing a new contract.
On a separate note, Mbapps legal team is also taking action against social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (formerly Facebook) in response to allegedly defamatory posts about him and his mother that surfaced during this dispute. As of now, X has refrained from making any comments, while Meta has not responded to requests for a statement.
Despite the turmoil surrounding Mbapp, PSG has continued its dominance in French football, clinching this seasons domestic league title and securing a victory against English club Aston Villa in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
