In a surprising turn of events, Jill Mancino, an 84-year-old tortoise owner from Undy in Monmouthshire, has found herself in a state of disbelief after her long-time pet, Speedy, laid eggs. For 41 years, Jill and her husband believed Speedy to be a male tortoise, with the creature exhibiting what they interpreted as male behaviors, such as head-butting and mounting various garden objects.

However, a recent play date with a friend's male tortoise led to changes in Speedy's behavior that raised concerns for Jill. Notably, Speedy began to dig holes in the garden and showed a disinterest in food. Alarmed by these signs, Jill decided it was time for a veterinary visit.

During the examination, the veterinarian conducted an X-ray to determine what might be causing Speedy's unusual behavior. To the shock of Jill and her husband, the X-ray revealed that Speedy was not only female but also pregnant, carrying four eggs. This revelation turned their long-held belief about their beloved pet upside down.

Recalling the day of the vet visit, Jill expressed her astonishment: "By the time I got her home, she had laid two eggs—she, I should say—then when I put her out in the garden, she laid four more. I couldn't believe it; I was in total shock!" The couple had always treated Speedy as part of the family, and this surprising twist added yet another layer to their bond.

In a bid to protect the newly laid eggs, Jill took proactive measures, burying all four in a large flower pot and covering them with a plastic box to safeguard them from potential threats. This unexpected event has not only changed the way the couple views Speedy but has also sparked a curiosity about the care and future of the eggs.

Speedy, who is now 44 years old, has been a part of the Mancino family for almost half a century. The tortoise enjoys a leisurely lifestyle, often seen sunbathing or relaxing in the garden. Jill reflects on the joy Speedy has brought into their lives over the decades, and now, they face a new adventure as they anticipate the possibility of baby tortoises.

This unusual story serves as a reminder of how even familiar creatures can surprise us, revealing the complexities of nature and the unexpected twists in pet ownership.
