Reds' Top Prospect Chase Burns Set for MLB Debut Against Yankees

The Cincinnati Reds are set to call up their highly-touted pitching prospect, Chase Burns, from Triple-A Louisville, according to a report by C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. Burns is scheduled to make his Major League Baseball debut against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in his young career.
At just 22 years old, Burns has quickly ascended through the ranks of the Reds' organization since being selected as the second overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. During his final season at Wake Forest University, he showcased exceptional talent, achieving a remarkable 10-1 record while striking out a staggering 191 batters over 100 innings. His impressive performance earned him a 2.70 ERA, solidifying his reputation as one of the top collegiate pitchers in the country.
Entering the 2025 season, Burns was not only regarded as the top prospect within the Reds' organization, but he also ranked among the top 50 prospects across all of baseball. His initial foray into professional baseball has only enhanced his standing. In just 13 starts across High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, Burns has posted an astonishing 1.77 ERA, a 36.8% strikeout rate, and a remarkable 6.85 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His fastball consistently reaches triple digits, complemented by one of the most lethal sliders seen in the minor leagues. Despite the rapid pace of his rise, Burns has never appeared overwhelmed by the competition.
Although some may consider this promotion to the majors premature, Burns has undeniably earned this opportunity through his stellar performances. The Reds' decision to bring him up to the big leagues comes at a critical time as the team faces a significant shortage of starting pitching options. Their roster has been hit hard by injuries, with Wade Miley recently placed on the injured list (IL) after making only three appearances. This adds to the ongoing struggles of Hunter Greene and Carson Spiers, as well as newcomers Rhett Lowder, Julian Aguiar, and Brandon Williamson, all of whom have been sidelined for the entire season.
Adding to the team's pitching woes, Nick Martinez has been underperforming in June, while Chase Petty, who was recalled earlier in the day, has yet to secure a victory in his first three appearances in the majors. With their starting rotation in disarray, the Reds have decided to give their most promising prospect a well-deserved chance to shine at the highest level, less than a year after drafting him. However, the team will need to make room for Burns on both the active and 40-man rosters before he steps onto the mound for his debut.
