Apple's Vision for an All-Screen iPhone: What to Expect in the Coming Years

Apple has been making steady strides toward achieving an all-screen design for its iPhones, and according to recent insights, this goal may soon become a reality. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's renowned tech analyst, Mark Gurman, revealed plans for the future of iPhones that suggest significant design changes are on the horizon.
Gurman noted that Apple aims to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island featured on the upcoming iPhone models scheduled for release next year, 2024. This change marks another step in Apple’s relentless pursuit of a more immersive display. Additionally, he anticipates that a redesigned iPhone, celebrating its 20th anniversary, will make its debut in 2025.
The highly anticipated 20th-anniversary iPhone is expected to push the boundaries of smartphone design, featuring curved glass edges and remarkably slim bezels. Gurman emphasizes that this model could present a truly edge-to-edge display devoid of any cutouts, representing Apple’s first achievement of a completely seamless screen.
Adding to the excitement, Wayne Ma from The Information recently reported that the next generation of iPhones, specifically the iPhone 18 Pro models launching next year, will incorporate under-screen Face ID technology. This innovation will allow for a near-uninterrupted display by hosting only a small hole in the top-left corner for the front camera, eliminating the need for the current pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen.
However, this raises questions regarding Gurman’s assertion that a smaller Dynamic Island will still be featured next year. As Apple continues to refine its designs, it remains unclear how these elements will coexist in the next iterations of the iPhone.
Nevertheless, the future seems bright for Apple enthusiasts, as the first all-screen iPhone—boasting both under-screen Face ID and an under-screen front camera—is projected for release in 2027. This gradual transition towards an all-screen design began with the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017, which marked a significant shift from the traditional Touch ID and thicker bezels to innovative Face ID technology and the introduction of the notch. In 2022, the release of the iPhone 14 Pro saw another evolution with the adoption of the Dynamic Island.
