Honor Launches the World’s Thinnest Foldable Smartphone with Advanced AI Features

Honor, the innovative Chinese smartphone manufacturer that emerged as a separate entity from Huawei Technologies, has recently announced the launch of its latest flagship device, the Magic V5. Touted as the world’s “thinnest and lightest” foldable smartphone, the Magic V5 is set to revolutionize the market with its sleek design and state-of-the-art technology. This exciting announcement comes at a time when competition within the Chinese smartphone sector is intensifying, particularly among brands specializing in foldable devices.
The launch event took place on Wednesday, where the company proudly showcased the Magic V5’s impressive specifications. The device is priced starting at 8,999 yuan (approximately US$1,256), a competitive price point for a flagship smartphone. When folded, the Magic V5 measures a mere 8.8 millimeters in thickness and weighs only 217 grams. This combination of lightweight materials and a slim profile is a significant achievement in the realm of foldable smartphones and underscores Honor's commitment to innovation.
One of the standout features of the Magic V5 is its built-in AI agent known as Yoyo. This cutting-edge AI assistant is designed to enhance user productivity by generating presentation decks from shared articles with remarkable efficiency. Additionally, Yoyo can streamline transportation logistics by coordinating ride-hailing orders across various applications. When a ride is booked, it automatically cancels any other pending orders, showcasing its advanced communication capabilities with AI agents from different platforms. To further enhance these features, Honor has announced a strategic partnership with Alibaba Group Holding, which will focus on developing more agentic AI functionalities in key areas such as productivity, transportation, and shopping. This collaboration highlights Honor’s ambition to integrate artificial intelligence deeply into its product offerings.
Despite a general slowdown in consumer demand for foldable smartphones, the market in China is nonetheless witnessing substantial growth. According to a report by market intelligence firm IDC released in April, approximately 2.84 million foldable smartphones were shipped in the first quarter alone, marking a remarkable 53.1% increase year on year. This indicates a robust interest in foldable technology, even as overall consumer demand remains unpredictable.
Analyzing the competitive landscape, Huawei continues to dominate the foldable smartphone market in China, capturing a staggering 76.6% of the domestic market share in the first quarter, according to IDC data. Honor, while a distant second, holds a respectable 9.1% of the market. Huawei's recent launch of the Mate XT, recognized as the world’s first “trifold” smartphone featuring two hinges, further solidifies its lead in this burgeoning industry. Initially released for domestic sales in September 2024, the Mate XT is expected to be rolled out globally by February, setting a high bar for Honor and other competitors.
