Violence Claims 13 Lives Ahead of May 2025 Midterm Elections in the Philippines

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Wednesday that a total of 13 individuals have tragically lost their lives in 49 confirmed incidents related to the ongoing election period, which commenced on January 12 in preparation for the May 2025 midterm elections. This alarming statistic highlights the potential dangers that accompany the electoral process in the country.
According to the PNP's latest update, the fatalities have been distributed across various regions, with the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) experiencing the highest number of deaths, totaling four. The Zamboanga Peninsula follows with three fatalities, while two lives were lost in Cagayan Valley. Additionally, one fatality each was reported in the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Soccsksargen, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
In terms of law enforcement response, the PNP indicated that only three suspects have been apprehended in connection to these violent incidents, leaving a staggering 44 individuals still at large. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in place to protect voters and ensure a fair electoral process.
The nature of the violence has been varied, with the majority of the validated incidents being shooting-related, totaling 25 cases. Beyond these gun-related occurrences, the PNP has documented other forms of violence, including strafing, threats, harassment, explosions, cases of kidnapping with homicide, mauling, and grenade throwing. Such a broad spectrum of violent acts underscores the chaotic environment that often surrounds elections in the Philippines.
In addition to the confirmed election-related incidents, the PNP has noted a rise in suspected incidents, which currently stands at 86. These cases are still undergoing verification, and it remains to be seen how many will be confirmed as legitimate threats to the electoral process.
On the day of the election itself, a total of 27 incidents have been reported. Despite this concerning backdrop of violence and the delays experienced in the voting process across different regions, the PNP has maintained that, overall, the May 2025 midterm elections have been relatively peaceful. This assertion, however, may be met with skepticism given the gravity of the reported incidents.
