Oklahoma Quarterback Cole Gonzales Re-enters Transfer Portal, Leaving Team with New Depth Chart
In a surprising turn of events for the Oklahoma Sooners football team, quarterback Cole Gonzales has officially re-entered the transfer portal, paving the way for sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. to become the primary backup to starting quarterback John Mateer next season. Gonzales, who initially committed to join the Sooners from the transfer portal during the holiday season, has now decided to seek new opportunities, according to multiple reports.
This recent development raises questions about the quarterback dynamics within the team, particularly after Gonzales, a two-time finalist for the prestigious Walter Payton Award, failed to secure the starting position during the spring practices. Instead, John Mateer, a transfer from Washington State who was new to the program, successfully claimed the starting role amidst competition.
The Walter Payton Award is often regarded as the FCS equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, highlighting Gonzales's impressive accolades during his previous plays. Last season, he had an outstanding performance, leading all of NCAA football, including FBS, in passing yards through the first eight games. However, an unfortunate injury sidelined him for the final four games of the regular season, which may have impacted his chances of starting this year.
John Mateers impressive stats from his previous season with the Cougars included nearly 3,200 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions, showcasing his capability as a quarterback. Additionally, Mateer demonstrated dual-threat capabilities with 826 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns, further solidifying his position as the starter following spring camp.
Michael Hawkins Jr., who served as the primary backup last season, played in seven games during what was a transitional year for the Sooners. He stepped up significantly after Jackson Arnold, the former starter, transferred to Auburn in December. Notably, Hawkins had a standout performance in the Armed Forces Bowl against Navy, completing 28 of 43 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He also made critical plays during a comeback victory over Auburn, showcasing his potential for the upcoming season.
With Gonzales now departing, the Oklahoma Sooners will look towards a new quarterback depth chart as they prepare for the next season:
- Starter: John Mateer
- Backup: Michael Hawkins Jr.
- QB3: Jett Niu
