Can you believe it? US President Donald Trump is once again stepping into the spotlight, this time attempting to broker peace between two nations that have been at each other's throats for decades! On Thursday, he unveiled a historic peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, an announcement that could potentially transform the South Caucasus region forever.

During a press conference, Trump shared the thrilling news that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan are set to sign a monumental peace agreement at the White House. The President painted a picture of hope, asserting that this agreement could finally bring an end to decades of hostility, a conflict that has claimed countless lives and caused immense suffering. He boldly stated, “Many leaders have tried to end the war, with no success, until now, thanks to 'TRUMP'.”

With palpable excitement, Trump expressed his eagerness to host both leaders and facilitate this momentous occasion. He emphasized that the United States would also enter into bilateral agreements with both nations aimed at unlocking the full potential of the South Caucasus Region through joint economic ventures. “I am very proud of these courageous leaders for doing the right thing for the great people of Armenia and Azerbaijan. It will be a Historic Day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and, THE WORLD,” he proclaimed.

But what does this agreement mean for the future? Well, it could lead to the reopening of critical transport routes that have been closed since the early 1990s, paving the way for vital connections across the South Caucasus. According to anonymous US officials, this includes the establishment of a significant transit corridor across the region, aptly named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity. This corridor would link Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan region, which is currently separated by a stretch of Armenian land.

The proposed corridor aims to incorporate railway lines, oil and gas pipelines, and even fiber optic cables to facilitate the movement of goods and eventually passenger travel. Notably, private corporations, not the US government, would finance the construction of this ambitious project.

The groundwork for this agreement was laid following the visit of Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Baku earlier this year. It’s important to note that the Karabakh region has been a flashpoint of conflict for nearly forty years. The tensions date back to the Soviet era when the predominantly Armenian area maintained a degree of autonomy within Azerbaijan. The conflict, fueled by deep-rooted historical grievances, particularly the 1915 Ottoman massacre of Armenians, has seen violent clashes and devastating warfare.

Since Armenia’s independence from the USSR in 1991, the war over this region has escalated, resulting in a staggering toll of approximately 30,000 deaths and one million displaced individuals. A 1994 ceasefire left Armenian forces controlling key territories, but Azerbaijan launched a campaign to reclaim these lands in September 2020, supported by Turkey. After months of conflict, a Russian-brokered peace agreement was reached, leading to the deployment of peacekeepers in the region.

However, the situation took another dramatic turn when Azerbaijan reclaimed Karabakh in September 2023 through rapid military action, prompting a mass exodus of over 100,000 ethnic Armenians to flee to Armenia within just a week.
