Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on the edge of a ticking time bomb? Well, experts have just revealed that a massive underwater volcano off the coast of the US is experiencing a shocking surge in seismic activity, hinting at a potential eruption!

In just one day, over 2,000 earthquakes were recorded, sending shockwaves—literally and figuratively—through the scientific community. When it comes to volcanic eruptions, we know they can lead to catastrophic events like earthquakes and tsunamis, but the threat level is especially critical for the Axial Seamount, the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest.

Sitting less than 300 miles from the US coastline and nearly a mile beneath the ocean surface, Axial Seamount may not pose an immediate danger to human life, but its historical activity tells a different story. Previous eruptions in 1998, 2011, and 2015 suggest that this volcano is anything but dormant. And geophysicist William Chadwick of Oregon State University warns that this latest surge could lead to its biggest eruption yet.

Chadwick noted, “At the rate of inflation it’s going, I expect it to erupt by the end of the year.” He and fellow researcher Scott Nooner from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington have been closely monitoring the area. While they had seen a spike of over 2,000 earthquakes back in June, the daily average has since dropped to around 100. But uncertainty looms large as the scientists caution, “Nothing seems imminent at the moment since the rate of unrest keeps wavering up and down.”

Interestingly, while an eruption might not directly threaten human life, it could devastate marine ecosystems in the vicinity. Professor Deborah Kelley from the UW School of Oceanography shared a poignant reminder of nature’s resilience: “In 2011, we saw one of the venting areas become completely covered in lava flows. It wiped everything out. But what’s fascinating is that when we came back three months later, there were animals and bacteria colonizing the area again.” This is a testament to the incredible power of recovery in nature.

Chadwick also emphasized the importance of being prepared, as Axial Seamount seems to be perpetually active. “If it's not erupting, it's getting ready for the next one,” he stated, underscoring the volcano's ongoing restiveness.
