Diontae Johnson Signs with Cleveland Browns: His Fourth Team in Just One Year

In a surprising turn of events, wide receiver Diontae Johnson has officially signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, as confirmed by a reliable source who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity due to the pending announcement of the deal. This move, first reported by NFL Network, marks the fourth team Johnson has joined within a single year, showcasing both the challenges and changes NFL players can experience throughout their careers.
Johnson, a 28-year-old talent, began the previous season with the Carolina Panthers, where he quickly made a name for himself by leading the team with an impressive 30 receptions and accumulating 357 receiving yards before being traded to the Baltimore Ravens in late October. Unfortunately for Johnson, his time in Baltimore was largely uneventful; he managed just one catch over four games. The situation became more complicated when he controversially refused to enter a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1, leading to a one-game suspension and ultimately being waived by the Ravens on December 21.
His journey took another twist when he was claimed by the Houston Texans, where he managed to catch three passes, including a notable reception for 12 yards during the Texans' wild-card playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. However, his stint with Houston was short-lived, as he was waived shortly after that game. Texans' head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed that the arrangement simply did not work out as planned for either party.
In a strategic move, Johnson was subsequently claimed again by Baltimore, but this time it was primarily for the Ravens to potentially secure a compensatory draft pick in the 2026 draft, highlighting the intricate mechanics of NFL team strategies concerning contract negotiations.
Prior to his tumultuous season, Johnson was drafted in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, where he spent five productive seasons. His peak performance came in 2021 when he racked up 107 receptions, gained 1,161 yards, and scored eight touchdowns, proving he has the skills to make a significant impact when utilized properly.
Now, as he joins the Browns, Johnson will be stepping into a receiving corps that currently lacks depth, with Jerry Jeudy being one of the few notable options available. The looming question for fans and analysts alike is who will be throwing the passes during the offseason workouts and training camp. The Browns have an intense quarterback competition brewing between veteran Joe Flacco and young talent Kenny Pickett. Adding to the intrigue is the recent draft selection of promising quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, which could shift the dynamics of the team's passing game significantly.
As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Johnson to see if he can recapture his previous form and contribute to the Browns' ambitions moving forward. The upcoming months promise to be pivotal for both the player and the franchise as they hope to solidify their positions in the league.
