People visiting Belgium could face delays due to strike action. In an update provided on April 30, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned that strike action is an “ongoing issue”. The Government body also advised that some areas of the country could see potentially violent demonstrations. ‌ “Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause travel disruption,” the FCDO said. “General strikes took place on 31 March and 29 April. Strike action may be announced at short notice. ‌ The FCDO warned that Brussels could be particularly affected (Image: Getty ) “Monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays.” Providing more detailed information, the FCDO said that demonstrations and strikes “often take place” in major cities in Belgium. This particularly affects transport hubs and around the Schuman area (EU quarter) in Brussels. The FCDO continued: “Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause severe travel disruption across the country and affect international travel. Article continues below “Strike action may be announced at short notice and planned strike action may be extended at short notice. Strikes can coincide with demonstrations and protests.” Demonstrations Alongside strike action, the FCDO warned of potential demonstrations that could hinder travel plans in Belgium. “Most demonstrations are peaceful, but there is a risk of unrest or violence,” it said. “There has also been violence following major sporting fixtures. Demonstrations by farmers can block major roads and delay traffic.
