More info A teen who admitted using a claw hammer to attack a man at a Mutley Plain bus stop has been sent to a Young Offenders Institution. The 17-year-old - who cannot be named for legal reasons - carried out the attack on the morning of January 6 this year. During a previous hearing at Plymouth Youth Court, it was explained that the youth had had got off a bus on Mutley Plain at around 8.45am and saw a man he knew. The teen then launched an attack on the man using a claw hammer which he had hidden in a trouser pocket. The court heard the attack caused "serious injuries" to the man, who was known to the teen, leaving him with a "serious skull fracture". During the same hearing on January 7, the prosecutor told the court the man was "still not able to speak" and it was not yet known whether this was due to his condition following surgery or whether it was as a result of his injuries. The teen pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and being in possession of a weapon - the claw hammer. He appeared at Plymouth Crown Court on May 1 where he was told he would be detained at a Young Offender Institution for two years. He was also handed a restraining order with regards to two people until April 30, 2029. The judge handed the teen a four month sentence for the possession of the claw hammer, to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £41.
