MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, a former GOP congressman and outspoken Never Trump conservative, often makes a point that President Donald Trump's allies hate to hear coming from the right: Trump, Scarborough argues, inherited a solid economy from former President Joe Biden — and is now putting it in danger by pushing steep tariffs. According to many economists, both left and right, Trump's tariffs are a recipe for soaring prices, a recession, a weakening U.S. dollar, supply-chain problems and empty shelves in stores. In an op-ed published by MSNBC's website on May 2, however, Scarborough laments that Trump isn't the only Republican who is endangering the U.S. economy's wellbeing. By refusing to adequately stand up to him, the Never Trumper emphasizes, they are also a big part of the problem. "If I'm a Democrat, I'm not blaming this all on Trump. Republicans in the Senate had a chance on Wednesday, (April 30) to take a stand against these tariffs and terminate the 'national emergency' the president used to implement them. There's no national emergency that could justify what the president has done. Republicans know that." Scarborough argues that before Trump started his second presidency and pushed steep new tariffs, the "U.S. economy was the envy of the world." And Senate Republicans, he writes, missed an opportunity to stand up to him during an April 30 vote. "Republicans needed to protect that economy, and they had the opportunity to do that with Wednesday's vote," Scarborough laments. "But, in the end, only three Republican senators were brave enough to take a stand against Trump. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were the only Republicans to tell the (Trump) Administration that they refused to forfeit all of their power on tariffs to the White House." Scarborough continues, "The American people will feel the impact of Trump's tariffs — if they haven't already. When the next election comes around, the same Republicans who refused to stand up to the president can't go on the campaign trail and point their finger at Trump. Those Republicans own this. The Republican senators who refused to join their colleagues on Wednesday own it. Republican House members who have stood idly by as Trump wreaks havoc on the economy own it."
