Rangers might party after beating Celtic but it won’t paper over the cracks, flops’ mindsets all wrong says Kris Boyd

IF Rangers win, the players will be entitled to celebrate. Despite what certain people think, they would be well within their rights to enjoy the moment. OK, so Celtic are champions and there’s a huge gap between the two teams right now. Nothing that happens at Ibrox tomorrow is going to change that. But Barry Ferguson and his team went wild after fighting back from being 2-0 down against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. And I’d have no problem with them doing the same again should this final Premiership Old Firm derby of the season go their way. But there also has to be an acceptance this season has been woefully bad and nowhere near good enough. And I’d like to think that another victory against Celtic tomorrow would lead to an inquest to ask why. You wouldn’t bet against that result happening, would you? It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if they turned up and performed against Brendan Rodgers’ team and took another three points off them. In actual fact, that’s probably even what a lot of people are expecting to happen now. Because standing up to be counted in these games has not been a problem for Gers. They have already taken six points from their rivals and played really well in those games. We all know it’s been the other fixtures that’s shown the flaw in this group of players. The games when they have been expected to win and they haven’t had the mentality to get the job done. No disrespect to St Mirren, but Rangers have picked up just four points from a possible 12 against them. Given the disparity in the two club’s budgets that’s nowhere near acceptable. Saints aren’t the only team who have taken points off them either. There will be players at Ibrox on more money than the whole Buddies squad put together. Yet Stephen Robinson has a group of players who give him absolutely everything every single week — regardless of who they are up against.Rangers? They have a squad that’s let down one manager after another. Ferguson had high hopes of getting a tune out of those players when he first went into the club following Philippe Clement’s sacking. But it didn’t take long for him to realise his words were falling on deaf ears. Those players were showing themselves up, just like they had to the gaffers before Fergie. It’s like they think they are better than they are. Either that, or they just haven’t been able to work out what kind of mentality is required at Rangers. It’s now reached the stage where Ferguson is coming out and saying, ‘What’s the point?’. I get it. I can fully understand why he’s so exasperated. He is Rangers through and through, and it will be killing him to see players going through the motions. As a player, he wasn’t prepared to accept second best. And he’s no different as a caretaker manager. Fergie will be driving it into the players what’s required from them in each and every game. How you have to stand up to the scrutiny you’re under and also thrive in it. Let’s get it right, no one in Scottish football likes Rangers. From my own experience, if you’re not with the club then you’re against it. Even now, I get abuse at every ground in the country when I turn up to watch a game for Sky. Some of the things that get shouted at me are just pathetic. Does it bother me? No. Believe me, it’s water off a duck’s back. But the only reason I get abuse is because I happened to play for Rangers. And even though it’s years since I left the club, I still get it.It doesn’t stop me doing my job now, though. Just as it didn’t stop me doing my job when I pulled on the shirt. But I look at the players now and I don’t think they are capable of handling the pressure of performing when you’re running out against opposition you are expected to beat. It’s different on European nights and when it’s an Old Firm derby against Celtic. In many ways, the pressure is OFF in those games. But it should be galling for those players if they somehow manage to beat Celtic again tomorrow. They should be looking at the league table and asking themselves how on earth they are so far behind. In all honesty, I hope that inquest has already happened. But I also wonder if it’s too late for some of the players in that dressing room and they know it. I tell you what, though. They better be ready for Celtic coming for them because, from what Callum McGregor has been saying this week, they are desperate to win. ‘We want to put things right’, was how he put it. He could easily have talked about how Celtic are champions, and that this derby doesn’t really matter in the context of the season. But his message was that Celts aren’t happy with how they have done against Rangers this season, and how they have to change that at Ibrox in tomorrow’s derby. Don’t get me wrong, Rangers have fully deserved to take six points out of nine in the Old Firm games so far. A lot of people have focused on how poorly Celtic have played in the games they have lost — but Gers were well worth their wins. It remains to be seen whether or not they have another big celebration in them. Incidentally, there will be Celtic fans at Ibrox, but there will be none at the Crucible. I saw John Higgins talking about how his beloved team were 54 titles ahead of their rivals. How ironic it was then that he missed a blue on his way out of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield!
