Fans invade the pitch as historic SPFL club become first to WIN league title across top four divisions

FANS rushed onto the pitch as Arbroath became the first team across the SPFL's main top four divisions to clinch a league title. The Red Lichties cruised to a 4-0 victory over third-placed Stenhousemuir thanks to a double from Sam Stanton and further goals from Fraser Taylor and Andy Winter to be crowned winners of League One. Arbroath were relegated back to the third tier last year, having been in the Championship for five seasons. Since their improbable run to the Premiership promotion play-offs in the 2021/22 campaign (being pipped to the title itself by Kilmarnock on the last day), the Angus outfit had loitered closer to the bottom of the league over the next couple of years. Long-time manager Dick Campbell was dismissed midway through last season but his replacement Jim McIntyre couldn't starve off relegation. Colin Hamilton and David Gold took over as co-managers (whilst still playing) just after the start of the season as McIntyre lost two of the opening three league games and left the club. The pair have managed to turn things around - from being bottom after seven games - and guide the club to the top of the table. Before today they were already guaranteed a play-off spot but Cove Rangers were mathematically still in the title race. And with Stenny also on the outside looking in, Arbroath knew a win would make them the first club across the SPFL's four main divisions to secure a league title. They did so in style and could have even won by more than four. It remains an intense battle for the remaining play-off places in League One with Cove, Stenhousemuir, Queen of the South and Alloa all in realistic contention. Kelty Hearts were also in the hunt but the appointment of Celtic cult hero Charlie Mulgrew didn't go to plan and they have drifted to sixth, seven points behind Alloa in fifth. Hundreds of supporters invaded the pitch at the full-time whistle to celebrate with the players, who will now look forward to next season in the second tier. Falkirk could claim the Championship title next weekend and Celtic could win the Premiership tomorrow if Rangers lose to Aberdeen.
