Anthony Ramos Recalls Madonna's Disruptive Attendance at 'Hamilton'

Actor Anthony Ramos, renowned for his role in the groundbreaking musical Hamilton, recently shared an amusing yet somewhat frustrating experience he had during a performance when he spotted none other than pop icon Madonna in the audience. During his guest appearance on Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen, Ramos was asked a light-hearted question regarding the most intimidating celebrity he encountered while performing in the acclaimed Broadway show.
Without a moment's hesitation, the 33-year-old answered, “The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face,” referring to the singer's apparent distraction during the performance. Ramos recounted how Madonna, now 66, seemed completely absorbed in her device rather than the show unfolding in front of her. He animatedly mimicked her posture during the performance, saying she was “like this the whole time,” with her head bent down, focusing on her tablet.
Ramos expressed his disappointment, recalling his thoughts at the time, “I was like, ‘Damn, shorty.’ I’m like, ‘If you’re not enjoying it that much, you know, the door is right there.’” His comments painted a vivid picture of a performer trying his best while feeling the stark contrast of an audience member who appeared disinterested.
This isn't the first time Madonna has made headlines for her less-than-ideal behavior at theatrical performances. Back in April 2015, Playbill reported that she attended Hamilton at The Public Theater but was not welcomed backstage after the show, attributed to her alleged inappropriate conduct. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and original star of Hamilton, even tweeted about the incident, stating, “Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou.” That tweet has since been deleted, but it highlighted the frustration felt by those involved in the production.
A source familiar with the incident noted that Madonna arrived late and was seen using her phone multiple times during the performance, illuminating the otherwise dimly lit theater with its glow. These distractions were reportedly noticeable throughout both acts, leading to the decision to bar her from the backstage area after the performance.
Ramos, who portrayed John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the iconic musical, departed from the role in November 2016, subsequently moving on to notable film roles in productions such as In the Heights, Dumb Money, and an upcoming project titled Twisters. His experience alongside other cast members in Hamilton remains a cherished part of his career, despite the occasional missteps by high-profile audience members like Madonna.
