Last week, a horrifying incident unfolded as the 360 Big Pendulum ride collapsed, sending dozens of screaming riders plummeting toward the ground. State media reported that 23 people sustained injuries, with four of them in serious condition after this terrifying event.

The ride, which had been entertaining thrill-seekers at the park near the western coast of Saudi Arabia—about 175 miles east of the Red Sea—suddenly snapped in half, leaving witnesses in a state of shock. Videos shared on social media captured the heart-stopping moment when the ride was swinging back and forth, and just seconds later, a chilling metallic snap was heard, followed by the sight of the ride crashing down.

As the terrifying scene unfolded, the riders, strapped into the illuminated spinning wheel, were left at the mercy of gravity. Witnesses described the moments after the incident as chaotic, with the Saudi Red Crescent Authority rushing to the scene to provide medical assistance. Thankfully, the wheel, despite its catastrophic failure, managed to right itself as it fell, which likely prevented a far worse tragedy from unfolding. Miraculously, no one lost their life, but the injuries were severe enough to warrant immediate hospital care.

The central support pole of the ride recoiled rapidly as the wheel became dislodged, and onlookers could only watch in horror as the ride tipped past a 90-degree angle. After the dust settled, the governor of Taif, Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud Bin Abdulaziz, ordered the park’s closure while an investigation into the incident began. This includes a thorough safety assessment of other rides at the park.

Just last month, a tragic incident occurred at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, where a 9-year-old girl drowned in a wave pool, showing that safety must always be a priority.
