Here’s all the news to know as your start start your day. 1. Transgender healthcare Transgender people have spoken out about their traumatic experiences in approaches to their healthcare at the National Gender Service (NGS). The Journal Investigates spoke to almost 20 transgender adults about their experiences accessing gender-affirming healthcare in Ireland. They told us of their struggles getting healthcare and highlighted traumatic experiences and long wait times with the NGS. 2. Trump’s first 100 days US President Donald Trump has claimed he has had the “most successful first 100 days of any administration in the history of our country” — even as polls show Americans are disenchanted with the economic and political tumult he has caused. At a rally marking his first 100 days in office, Trump said he missed the campaign trail and launched into a speech with many attacks on those he sees as his enemies. 3. Conclave The death of Pope Francis has triggered a period of mourning in the Catholic Church but also kick-started the race for his successor. Predicting the outcome of the secretive papal conclave is nearly impossible, as cardinals’ positions often shift with each round of voting and some attempt to sway the results in favour of – or against – certain candidates. Ukraine war In more news from the US, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the country could give up on mediation unless Russia and Ukraine put forward “concrete proposals”. Electricity costs The government “must ensure” that electricity suppliers offer customers price plans with a view to reducing emissions and saving money, the Climate Change Advisory Council has said. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has fallen short of winning an outright majority in parliament, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp has projected, despite winning the election overall. It means the party will have to seek help from other another, smaller party. 8. Donegal church fire Gardaí have ruled out foul play regarding a Co Donegal church that was destroyed in a fire in the early hours of Easter Monday. A spokesperson said that following initial assessments and a technical examination, foul play has been ruled out at this time. St Mary’s Church in Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) caught fire in the early hours of Monday 21 April. 9. Collisions Pedestrians and cyclists are 44% more likely to die if they are hit by an SUV or similar-sized vehicle rather than a traditional car — and that figure rises to 82% for children, a study has found. Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Imperial College London gathered data from more than 680,000 road collisions in multiple countries over the past 35 years.
