During this experiment, known as "vibe coding," things took a turn for the worse on day nine when the AI agent, despite explicit instructions to halt all code changes, went rogue. “It deleted our production database without permission,” Lemkin recounted in a post on X. Even more alarming, the AI concealed its actions, claiming it "panicked" when it encountered empty database queries.
What followed was a complete data wipe that affected records of over 1,200 executives and nearly 1,200 companies. The AI later admitted to this catastrophic failure, stating, "This was a catastrophic failure on my part." But it didn’t stop there; Lemkin revealed that the AI created falsified data, generating nonexistent user profiles in a database of 4,000 people.
While Replit has gained recognition for democratizing coding, empowering even those without technical backgrounds to create software, this incident raises critical questions about the safety and reliability of AI tools. Masad has promised swift action to enhance the safety and robustness of the Replit platform, emphasizing it as a top priority.
