With March unofficially termed National Sleep Awareness Month – and 14 March World Sleep Day – the importance of getting a good quantity and quality of sleep for overall health and wellbeing is being talked about more than ever. Yet it's clearly something that lots of people struggle with – for example, new research has revealed that two thirds (68%) of women in the UK admit they struggle to get good sleep. While I don't have serious sleep issues, the stresses of daily life do mean that I sometimes struggle to drop off and stay sleep through the night. Add to that occasional back pain and two cats that like to sleep on my legs at night, and I rarely get my full, uninterrupted eight hours. So when I heard about the new Relax & Renew package at Rockliffe Hall, a luxury spa hotel in County Durham, which promises '24 hours of total tranquility', I was desperate to try it out. Here's how I found it... Rockliffe Hall Situated near Darlington by the North Yorkshire/County Durham border, Rockliffe Hall is a grand five-star hotel with something for everyone: a luxe spa, an 18-hole golf course with clubhouse, and a seriously impressive fine dining restaurant. I could tell this was going to be a relaxing stay as soon as I stepped into the hotel's light, bright lobby, and was greeted by the receptionist's soothing tones. During our stay every part of the hotel felt peaceful, and never noisy or crowded. Every area of Rockliffe Hall seems huge, from the wide corridors and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gold course to our spacious bedroom, which featured a seating area, little balcony, and bathroom with a TV over the bath. Little personal touches such as a complimentary hamper of NIO cocktails and snacks, and chocolates on your pillows with the turndown service make it feel extra-special. Guests who book the Relax & Renew package will also find treats from beauty and wellbeing brand NEOM in their rooms, a brand I absolutely love. I used the magnesium-rich bath milk and body butter before bed, and I swear it helped me sleep even better. The spa at Rockliffe Hall The Spa at Rockliffe Hall is a destination in its own right, and huge: a vast reception area, loads of treatment rooms and plenty of bathing facilities that are some of the best I've ever experienced: a big circular indoor hydropool, lots of loungers, and multiple heated experiences, from foot spas and salt steams to infrared saunas and even an igloo room (not as unbearable as it sounds!). A 90-minute session in the separate Spa Garden is included in the Relax & Renew package – or it costs £25 per person if booked separately – and it's well worth it if the weather's nice. This exclusive zone gets you access to a small infinity pool overlooking the golf course, a glass-fronted sauna and attentive staff bringing drinks to your lounger. My treatment I tried the spa's new Tranquility Pro-Sleep Massage, which was explained to me as a light touch massage and application of oil front and back, designed to soothe and relax rather than pummel out knots. I'll be honest, I've had light pressure massages in the past and they've barely felt like more than a disappointing tickle – but this was completely different. The combination of the warm bed, the dark red room and the theraputic touch felt so soothing and comforting; almost like being in the womb. I never normally fall asleep during massages but this one had me nodding off a couple of times. My spa session ended with a short guided meditation session tucked up in a comfy bed under blankets; the perfect end to the day. The food at Rockliffe Hall Tucked away in a corner of the building, Rockliffe's restaurant, dinner at TERRA – which is overseen by James Close, the first chef in the North East to be awarded two Michelin stars – feels like something of an undiscovered gem, dishing up the finest French cuisine served by the most efficient and professional staff. Start your dining experience with a glass of champagne from the old-fashioned drinks trolley that wheels around (Rockliffe Hall's bubbles come from the champagne house PIAFF) paired with fresh oysters, before indulging in refined classics such as French onion soup, steak tartare and halibut bouillebaisse; I'm still thinking about my Cheddar cheese soufflé, which was as light and airy as it was rich, and the perfect light red wine that was recommended alongside it. Save room for dessert, where you'll find exquisite French patisserie and cheeses on offer. Rockliffe Hall is currently undergoing a major renovation project (don't worry, it won't disrupt your stay one bit), with a new restaurant coming to a purpose-built pavilion at the end of the year. The verdict All in all, the combination of the beautiful setting, the soothing treatment and meditation, the delicious meal, the comfiest bed and the completely stress-free experience had me feeling totally relaxed by bedtime. I sometimes struggle to sleep in a hotel – especially if I've had a rich meal – but this stay had me nodding off within minutes, and waking up feeling refreshed and revived. How much does it cost to stay at Rockliffe Hall? A stay at Rockliffe Hall starts from £312 on a bed and breakfast basis. The Relax & Renew package starts from £595 per room per night based on two people sharing a New Hall standard double or twin bedroom.
