The Escape From Tarkov PvE wipe is a good thing, and it will make 1.0 way better

Until now, Escape From Tarkov PvE has been a place where you can do raids, hunt PMCs, and get loot without having to wipe all your progress. When it was made available as an expansion back in 2024, Battlestate said that EFT's player-versus-environment mode would never force you to reset your character. Now, with the 1.0 and Steam releases on their way, BSG confirms that to reach the conclusion of Escape From Tarkov PvE, you will in fact need to wipe. But it's not forced – and starting from scratch will actually make the completed version of the extraction FPS a lot more enjoyable. Escape From Tarkov PvE is a good place to go when you're first starting, and also if you want to appreciate the core experience of the FPS game without competition from other, often more-experienced players. The PMCs are pretty high level and there's a lot of loot. Best of all, you aren't subject to the same progress wipes as PvP – combined with the dedicated PvE Flea Market, you can get some good gear and upper-tier weapons pretty quickly. BSG has confirmed that Escape From Tarkov 1.0 will arrive in the summer of 2025, and that a Steam version of the extraction shooter is also inbound. However, a recent announcement from the developer has raised questions about the future of PvE. On Wednesday April 30, Battlestate published a small roadmap, outlining the additions and changes that are planned for EFT throughout the rest of the year. It says that, before the game's full release, "PvE will require a wipe." Battlestate COO Nikita Buyanov also said that PvE would be wiped, during a recent stream discussing the 1.0 launch. On the surface, this contradicts what the studio previously promised – on the BSG store page, if you go to purchase the PvE expansion, it still says that you will get "access to the PvE Zone mode without wipes." But actually, the situation is more complex. Although a PvE wipe will arrive ahead of 1.0, it won't be forced on players. If you want to finish the quest lines that are new to 1.0, and reach the pseudo "end" of PvE, yes, you will need to wipe your progress and start over. But if you aren't interested in the new, 1.0 material, you don't have to wipe – you can keep your character, gear, and weapons. The wipe is therefore optional. It's also worth noting that you've always been able to choose to wipe your PvE progress – this isn't something new for EFT 1.0. On top of that, a PvE wipe for 1.0 makes the most sense. The full version of the game will herald the completed, comprehensive versions of the player-versus-environment raids, allowing you to finally play the entirety of Tarkov from start to finish. Instead of everyone playing it from different starting points, and BSG having to tune the climactic 1.0 raids around thousands of different builds, it'll surely be smoother, and more enjoyable for players, if everyone is experiencing the finale of Tarkov at a similar pace. But that does present one problem. PvE has its own Flea Market. Most players will probably choose to wipe, but there will be some who don't. There could be a big imbalance between what players want and what's available. Those who have chosen to wipe might not be able to get the higher-level gear being offered by the non-wiped players, while the non-wiped players might not have access to the gear they need, since the majority of the Tarkov PvE world is starting from zero. Likely the best solution is to give non-wipe players their own Flea Market, and then also a separate Market for players who have decided to reset their progress for 1.0.
